Perseverance and Patience

I've run into somewhat of a hitch with sweepstaking as of late. Sadly, my laptop has been out of commission for the past week. This has made it extremely difficult to enter contests. However, my husband has been kind to lend me his laptop in my time of need. I can't say that this is entirely a selfless act since he benefits from my winnings. He likes winning as much as I do. In fact, he won his second ever prize a few days ago - a family feast for 4 at Shoney's. Not too shabby for a non-sweeper. Thankfully, my laptop situation has been rectified, and I'm back at it, with a win just the other day.

The Most Magical Place on Earth

I absolutely love Walt Disney World and am always excited when a Disney sweeps pops up, whether it's for DisneyLand, Walt Disney World, the Disney Cruise Line, or International Disney parks/properties. Although winning a Disney related trip isn't among my top 4 wishlist wins, I would love to actually win a Disney vacation. Fortunately, these types of contests are frequently given away! In fact, several related sweeps are sponsored by the mouse himself. Because of my Disney love, I will probably post these types of sweepstakes often. Deal with it :o)

Usually, my go to sweepstaking site is Sweepstakes Advantage. However, I also check out MouseSavers once a week since they catalog Disney related sweeps that are some times missed by SA on their contests page. So, if you are like me and love the idea of winning a Disney related sweepstakes, I would definitely check out MouseSavers from time to time.

Since I've been posting and boasting my love of Disney sweeps, it only seems fitting to provide information for a newly announced contest for a Disney Dream Vacation:

ABC/Disney - AFV Dream Vacation Sweepstakes

Grand prize:  winner's choice of either a 7-night Eastern or Western Caribbean Disney Cruise Line Vacation from Port Canaveral, Florida, for four people to be taken aboard the Disney Fantasy.

Success and Sweeping

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to share my sweepstaking story with a class of about fifteen college freshman. The aim of the presentation was improving on a skill. I've been sweepstaking consistently for just over two years, and it is amazing to me how much I have won and how efficient I've become. For instance, I can typically enter 2-3 sweepstakes per minute, and my eyes have become "trained," so to speak, so I can scan through rules and regulations, emails, and entry forms at a relatively fast pace.

It was a lot of fun to recap my success, and the talk made me more motivated than ever to sweep. One question I was asked was whether or not I am just lucky. In some respects I do feel like some of my wins have a bit of luck to them, but I also believe my chances of winning truly are as good as anyone else's. My motto is "Someone is going to win, why shouldn't it be me?" or you for that matter!?!

Keep sweeping; wins are out there, and you'll get one!

Out with the Old, In with the New

I love the transition from one month to the next. The end of a month is when many sweepstakes naturally end, and the beginning of a month is when many sweepstakes naturally begin. I get a twist of pleasure seeing sweepstakes I've entered, especially daily entries, expire at the end of the month. It's the same feeling I get when I scratch something off of my to-do list. Conversely, I feel a rush of excitement with the influx of new sweepstakes at the beginning of every month.

Doubling my excitement at the beginning of a fresh month is when that month holds a key holiday. Valentine's Day just happens to be around the corner which means sweepstakes centered around expensive jewelry and romantic vacations are more abundant. Truth be told, I wouldn't mind winning Lindt chocolate truffles either.

Beyond the enjoyment of retiring expired sweepstakes and entering new ones, the first half of every month are when most expired sweepstakes deliver their prizes or contact winners. It is during this time that checking my email and getting my physical mail is especially invigorating. In my experience, the majority of the prizes I've won (excluding instant wins) have come during this crucial time.

Here's hoping February will be a fantastic sweeping month!

Types of Sweepstakes

There are several different types of sweepstakes to enter. Here, I'll outline the most common:

One entry - one entry per person
Daily entry or dailies - one entry per person per day
24 hour entry - one entry per person per 24 hours
Instant Wins - one entry per person per day with the chance to win instantly
Weekly/Monthly entry - one entry per person per week/month
Unlimited Entry - infinite amount of entries
Odd entry - typically requires something more involved for entry, ex. essay, graphic design/artwork, music jingle, video, etc.
Social Media entry - contests facilitated through social media sites such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

My personal favorite type of sweepstakes are One Entry. The reason for this is that my odds for winning are as good as anyone else's. I also like Instant Wins, and the majority of the wins in my repertoire are the result of these type of sweepstakes. I'm not a big fan of Dailies, but I enter them anyway. They take a lot of time, so I am very selective about entering them. For me, I have to really, really want the prize to invest the time. I usually only enter a daily if the Arrival value is at least $1,500, otherwise, it's generally not worth my time. I loathe unlimited entries and hardly ever enter them. I'd rather know the my odds have the potential to be as good as any other person's.

Social Media contests are so-so for me. Some take a good amount of time, and I don't typically enter anything that I have to do anything special for. I don't have a Pinterest account and haven't gotten into Twitter sweepstakes yet. I'm also not into blogs. Initially, I didn't participate in Facebook contests but there were always so many great prizes via FB sweeps that I was finally persuaded to start entering them. I haven't been disappointed. In Fall 2012, I won a trip to the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas courtesy of a FB sweeps!

Win Alert!

Since I started sweeping, getting the mail each day has become one of my favorite pastimes. Many wins come unannounced and just show up in my mailbox or on my front stoop. I LOVE unexpected wins! I never know what might come in the mail and am always hopeful for a win.

To make a long story short, today a small rectangular box showed up on my doorstep with my sweeping moniker on it. Thus, I knew it was an unexpected win! Here's what I got:

Contest Name: Face Stockholm Sweepstakes
Sponsor: LuckyMag.com
Prize: Face Stockholm 2-piece nail polish set and bag (ARV $27).

Sure, it may be a small win, but it helps keep me motivated to continue to sweep!

Creating Your Sweepstaking Identity

By entering sweepstakes, you are giving out your information. With so much internet crime and skilled hackers being able to pull information from your computer, it is always essential to be as careful as possible. For this reason as well as general safety concerns, you may consider creating another identity of sorts just for sweepstaking.

Email
The very first thing I would recommend is creating an email account just for contests. The biggest reason for this is junk mail. If you start entering contests, you must be prepared to get junk mail. Companies don't sponsor sweepstakes out of the goodness of their heart. It is a great way for them to generate a client base. Thus, it is commonplace to have to sign up for or automatically get signed up for email newsletters and the like. I don't get a lot of physical junk mail, believe it or not. Paper ads are expensive but email is free. Most companies are going to opt to send you a free email than spend the money on glossy ads and post to send it via postal mail.

It is important to keep up with your Sweepstaking email account though. I get somewhere around 60 emails a day, most of it junk. If I didn't check it regularly, it would build up considerably. Periodically, I go through and unsubscribe myself from e-newsletters to de-clutter my inbox and reduce the amount of junk mail I receive.

Most of my winning notifications have come via email. with so much junk mail, it could be easy to skim right over a winning mail. Thus, it is important to look through your emails and not just delete them. Once your eye is trained on what to specifically look for, it becomes a lot easier to scan your emails quickly and decipher what is junk and what is a win!

Phone
I don't like giving out my cell number because the last thing I need is telemarketers calling me. to combat this issue, I signed up for Google Voice. It's free and easy.  Google Voice generates a phone number that you can have forwarded to your cell, landline, whatever. I enter sweepstakes with this number, that way, when I receive a call to this number (my phone indicates that it's a Google Voice forwarded call), I know it's about a sweepstakes. I usually let it go to my voicemail. If it's important, they'll leave a message.

Social Media
Consider creating a Facebook account just for sweepstakes. Many sweeps are FB based, but I don't want to risk someone hacking into my account. Plus I don't need my personal FB spammed with sweeps stuff. I use a different account and don't friend anyone outside of other fellow sweepers who also have a FB just for sweeping. This way, I am not targeting myself or my friends. I don't put any info on that profile at all. I just use it to enter FB sweeps. The same could be said about Twitter, Pinterest, etc. I haven't gotten into the latter social media contests yet not do I really use those forms of social media. So, I don't have first hand experience with "alter-ego profiles" outside of Facebook.

Other Personal Information
My comfort level when giving out personal information is what's in the Phone Book. I don't mind giving out my physical address since anyone could look that up (I'm not unlisted). However, I do use a nickname when for contests I entered. The nickname is just a shorter version of my name that I rarely use outside of Sweepstaking. This is the name I use on my social media accounts as well. The biggest reason I do this is to sort quickly through my regular postal mail. If something comes to my nickname, I know it has the potential to be a win! I also like to monitor how much physical junk mail I get. Happily, I can report it is no more than maybe one ad a week, which I don't consider to be too bad.

I also don't like to give out my exact birth date. I understand why some sweepstakes want this information (trips, alcohol/tobacco related, etc. However, I just don't want to give out my birth date for personal reasons. Thus, I have resorted to being one month off from my actual birthday. I feel that this is an easy enough legitimate mistake to make that it wouldn't come in to question and, more importantly, it hasn't yet.

With any sweepstakes, if the grand prize is worth enough money ($600 or more), you have to fill out a tax form. On those, as well asliability forms or any other legal forms associated with a contest, I fill out my actual information (full name, real birth date, real phone number, etc). I've won all of my sweeps under a pseudonym and have not had any trouble claiming any of my prizes, so I will keep with this system unless i begins to cause a problem.

My Sweeping Story

Prior to my "sweeping" obsession, I'd won a few things here and there (concert tickets, movies, etc) on the radio or through local contests. During Summer 2010, my husband and I were dreaming about going to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I was searching for travel info, hoping to find a deal, and a link to a contest through Orlando's Convention and Visitor's Bureau came up in my search results. On a whim, I entered. Lo and behold, I ended up being one of a large group of winners.

While on this trip, I met one of the other contestant winners. I don't remember his name, but I now refer to him as the "Godfather" of sweeping. The Godfather told me all about his adventures in sweeping. He is retired and enters more sweepstakes a day than I can fathom. Practically everything he was wearing he had won. In fact, just a few weeks after our Orlando trip, he was headed to Israel courtesy of a sweepstakes win.

I was awestruck and inspired!

When I returned home, I started looking for other contests to enter. Eventually, I discovered that there are several sweepstaking websites that catalog the majority of sweepstakes available for entry. I started exploring these websites and got hooked.

Since January 2011, I have been a member of my sweepstaking website of choice, Sweepstakes Advantage. I've enjoyed being member of this particular virtual community, finding others who share my passion. I have found members of this sweeping community to be welcoming, positive, encouraging, and helpful. Often times, others share tips, entry codes, and other information which has definitely impacted my sweeping success.

Since I began sweeping regularly, I've been fortunate to enjoy some fantastic wins. Beyond my initial big win, the aforementioned Orlando trip, I've won a week long trip to Mendoza, Argentina, an amazing weekend to Las Vegas, NV, for the 2012 iHeartRadio Music Festival, and a long weekend getaway to Myrtle Beach which I have yet to take. I've also won some sizable gift card, including $3,000 to Home Depot, $300 to Williams-Sonoma, and $100 to Target. Some other great prizes I've won include an iPad2 and a voucher for any pair of KEEN shoes, regardless of price. Although I love winning big and exciting prizes like those mentioned, it's fun to win small things too. In fact, one of my favorite things to win is movie ticket vouchers.

Suffice to say, I have been fortunate and blessed in sweeping success. I don't know if the win falls are always like this or maybe I have been lucky. All I do know is that I LOVE sweeping, I love winning, and I won't be stopping any time soon!
